What is adpkd?
t is a hereditary, chronic disease in which numerous cysts form in the kidneys over the years. This causes the kidneys to become increasingly larger and gradually lose their function.
The course varies from individual to individual; some have few symptoms, while others are affected somewhat earlier.
Primary mutations are also possible, in which case ADPKD is often discovered at a later stage, usually through an incidental diagnosis.
A = Autosomal - genetically inherited 50%
D = Dominant - directly from one parent
P = Polycystic - multiple (numerous) cysts
K = Kidney - kidneys
D = Disease - disease/disorder
ADPKD is considered one of the most common and rapidly progressive genetic diseases worldwide.
